Physical PS5 games still have plenty of buyers — that’s the message from new sales data shared by The Game Business, which suggests gamers are voting with their wallets as Sony prepares to end disc production.

The Numbers

According to Ampere Analysis, 35% of worldwide sales of Marvel’s Wolverine in September came from boxed physical copies — roughly 756,000 units based on an estimated 2.16 million total sales. The figure jumps even higher in Europe: 51% of PS5 sales in the region were physical, per the same data.

Other PlayStation titles are also selling well on disc worldwide: Silent Hill: Townfall at 46%, The Blood of Dawn at 36%, and several others showing strong physical attach rates.

Sony’s Disc Sunset

The data arrives as Sony has announced plans to stop producing discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028. Earlier analysis from Alinea Analytics pointed in a similar direction for Sony’s broader strategy. Gamers appear to be pushing back — or at least showing that demand for physical media remains robust, particularly in European markets.

The GTA 6 Factor

Even the biggest digital-only release isn’t stopping physical demand: nearly 9 out of 10 GTA 6 pre-orders are for the more expensive physical editions, despite the game being a digital-only title at launch.

What It Means

With Marvel’s Wolverine selling an estimated 2.16 million copies total (digital plus physical), the physical share represents a significant chunk of revenue — and a clear signal that a large portion of the PS5 player base still prefers owning a box. Whether Sony’s 2028 timeline holds remains to be seen, but the numbers make one thing clear: discluk isn’t dead yet.
