Capcom is letting Switch 2 owners try before they buy. The Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo arrives worldwide on October 19, giving players a “fairly generous” slice of the game ahead of its full December 4 release on Nintendo’s console.

The demo lets you play the very beginning of the game, up to the start of Chapter 1-3, “To the Forest.” It is offline-only, so the four-player online hunts the series is known for are off the table — but you do get to try out all 14 weapon types and get full access to the character creator. Save data will migrate from the demo to the full game, just like the demo pathing on PC and other consoles.

Local Multiplayer Is the Switch 2 Twist

Unlike other consoles, the Switch 2 demo includes an option for local multiplayer: if someone nearby has the demo downloaded on their own Switch 2, you can play some of the hunts together in co-op. Online multiplayer is not available in the trial — that comes with the full game. Photo Mode is absent from the demo as well.

Functionally, the Switch 2 version of the demo will not be all that different from the one that already appeared for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, Siliconera notes — it covers the same introduction. Capcom also confirmed eShop pre-orders for the full game open on October 19.

Capcom’s December Push

There has been plenty of speculation about how a game as massive as Monster Hunter Wilds will run on Switch 2, and Capcom has described the porting effort as a “painstaking, seemingly endless process” to get the game into a shippable state on the hybrid console. A lot of the initial criticisms of Wilds’ shaky launch have been addressed since, with difficulty rebalancing and steady performance patches.

The Switch 2 release is another step toward Capcom’s stated goal of making Wilds “surpass” the dizzying apex of Monster Hunter World’s sales and popularity — with the upcoming Ascendance expansion, due in 2027 on every platform, as the next big swing.

Monster Hunter Wilds launches on Switch 2 on December 4, 2026. The Prologue Demo arrives October 19.
