Bill Skarsgård Cast As The Lead In Physint, Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid Spiritual Successor

Bill Skarsgård poses in costume as the lead of Kojima's Physint action-espionage game, revealed during Xbox's Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast

Physint, the upcoming action-espionage game from Hideo Kojima’s Kojima Productions, finally has a star. Bill Skarsgård — best known for playing Pennywise in the recent It duology and Count Orlok in 2024’s Nosferatu — has been cast as the lead of the spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid, announced today at the close of Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast.

From the Man Himself

“I’m delighted to confirm the lead role for PHYSINT will be Bill Skarsgård,” Hideo Kojima said in a press release. “We are both long-time fans of each other’s work, and we’ve decided to embark on this new adventure together. The costume fittings, scans, and camera tests we conducted with Bill and Charlee earlier this year gave me tremendous confidence in the direction of the project.”

The “Charlee” Kojima references is Charlee Fraser (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Anyone But You), confirmed for the project last September alongside Ma Dong-seok (Don Lee) of Train to Busan and Eternals fame, and Minami Hamabe, lead of Godzilla Minus One. Skarsgård rounds out the headlining trio and signals the studio is now actively building its principal cast — Kojima added that the team is still “making progress on casting, talent scans, and collaborations with outside creators.”

The First Update Since Xbox Stepped In

This is the first real Physint news since September 9, when PlayStation abruptly announced it was stepping away from the project — and Xbox swooped in to publish it barely a minute later. A Bloomberg report days later claimed Kojima Productions had missed key deadlines and was on track to be “well over budget,” and that the Death Stranding series had not met PlayStation’s revenue expectations.

The Physint update appeared at the tail of Xbox’s TGS 2026 broadcast, preceded by new behind-the-scenes footage of recent OD – Knock performance-capture sessions — the horror game Xbox and Kojima Productions are still co-producing, starring Sophia Lillis and Hunter Shafer.

What Xbox Is Saying

In a press release on Xbox Wire, Microsoft noted that its collaboration with Kojima Productions “also extends beyond games,” and that the two companies are “working together across film and television to bring new stories to broader audiences.” A curious echo of the Columbia Pictures partnership Kojima originally announced for the project back in 2024 — when Physint was still a PlayStation exclusive revealed on the Sony studio lot in Hollywood.

What We Still Don’t Know

Beyond the casting reveal, TGS 2026 was light on Physint specifics — no release window, no platform confirmation beyond Xbox’s publishing role, no gameplay footage. Skarsgård joins a project that, after the high-profile publisher switch, is now one of the most-watched games in development. Kojima’s quote, however, makes one thing clear: production is moving.

“The costume fittings, scans, and camera tests we conducted with Bill and Charlee earlier this year gave me tremendous confidence in the direction of the project,” he said. Translation: this is no longer just a teaser trailer. There is now a cast, in wardrobe, in front of mocap cameras.
