Gears of War: E-Day Early Access Is Live — Full Release Lands October 6

Emergence Day has arrived — early. Gears of War: E-Day, The Coalition’s prequel set during the Locust invasion that started it all, is now playable in Early Access worldwide as of today, October 1, at 8:00 a.m. PT / 15:00 UTC. The full worldwide launch follows on October 6.

Early Access is open to Premium Edition players and Game Pass subscribers who picked up the Premium Upgrade. To mark the occasion, Microsoft released the launch gameplay trailer, soundtracked by Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls” — and studio head Mike Crump thanked fans “who have followed us on this journey,” adding: “We can’t wait for you to experience Emergence Day for yourselves.”

The game is available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam, with cloud gaming through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW, and it joins the Disc to Digital program at early access launch. Xbox has also published the full achievement list for players planning their route through the campaign — the same game whose ‘Flying Testicle’ Spore Matron reveal turned heads back in September.

What the First Review Says

The early verdict is promising. Eurogamer’s campaign review — unscored for now, since review access so far covers only the campaign, with a scored verdict on the full package including Horde and PvP still to come — calls E-Day “less a complete reset for the series, and more of an ‘active reload’,” concluding that “E-Day proves there’s still life in these old Cogs yet.”

The reviewer played roughly 20 to 25 hours on Hardcore — “the ‘intended’ difficulty, and appropriately brutal” — and describes a campaign that “never lets up”: a sad Marcus Fenix reunites with Dom Santiago on the anniversary of a fallen comrade’s death, before tunnels erupt across the city and Delta squad — Marcus, Dom, greenhorn private Reyes and combat-weary veteran Mags — fights for survival. Eurogamer credits the game with continuing the trilogy’s set-piece legacy “with aplomb,” writing that “Gears of War is back, alright, and it’s like it never left.”

Beyond the Game

Launch celebrations extend past the disc: new apparel is live in the Gears of War Xbox Game Studios Shop, uploading a Liquid Death Energy receipt unlocks an in-game chainsaw pose, and Prince Street Pizza is serving the Gears-themed Emergence Pie across its US locations.
