Fabletown is nearly ready to reopen its doors. Telltale’s The Wolf Among Us Remastered launches October 29 and is available to wishlist now — and Telltale has shared new insight into what went into rebuilding one of its most beloved series for returning fans and newcomers.
In an interview on the PlayStation Blog, Matt Saia — game director of The Wolf Among Us Remastered and VP of Creative at Telltale — calls the project “a love letter to fans.” The goal was a respectful update that honors the Telltale legacy: the story, the directorial choices and the overall art style were treated as sacred and left untouched. What’s new is updated art, behind-the-scenes features, and the best possible introduction for new players to “a fully-realized version of this amazing universe.”
Noir Mode
The headline addition is Noir Mode, which gives the whole game a pure noir film vibe in black and white. Saia is no stranger to the idea — he was the person who added Shadows Mode to Telltale’s Batman series — but says Wolf has been treated differently: “The tone feels different when it’s black and white. I love the colors of the main game but, in Noir Mode, the shadows feel a little darker.”
A Complete Visual Rebuild
Technically, the remaster goes far beyond a resolution bump. The team moved the game up from the old Telltale engine — “quirky but cool,” in Saia’s words — to the latest engine used in the Batman series, created new shaders for details like shiny bottles and inverted lines on moving objects, and relit every single scene in the game, which turned out to be the project’s biggest challenge.
Every character went through concept to high-end model to final in-game model, with all textures and models rebuilt and multiple times more detailed than the original. The balance was making sure that “when you look at Bigby, he looks like Bigby” — while the remastered version is unmistakably more refined. The team even built the entire Summer Games Fest trailer in-engine.
The Wolf Among Us Remastered launches October 29 on PS5, and wishlists are open now.
