Final Fantasy VII Revelation: Weapons, Typhon, and Open-World Traversal Revealed at Gamescom

Square Enix debuted a new gameplay trailer for Final Fantasy VII Revelation at Gamescom 2026’s Opening Night Live, showcasing reimagined superboss battles, a new summon, and the first look at open-world traversal. The third and final entry in the FFVII Remake trilogy launches in Spring 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

The Weapons Return as Reimagined Superbosses

The Gamescom trailer focused on the Weapons — the colossal guardians that emerge to defend the Planet in times of crisis. In the original FFVII, these were late-game optional bosses. In Revelation, they return as reimagined set-piece battles and ultra-challenging endgame encounters:

  • Ruby Weapon — Seen battling on desert sands, a towering monstrosity
  • Emerald Weapon — Underwater combat sequence at the bottom of the sea
  • Ultima Weapon — Mid-air dogfight sequences against a sky-bound titan

The Weapons make no distinction between friend and foe — they wreak catastrophic destruction on the planet and its people. Cloud and his allies must stand against them even as they race to stop Sephiroth and Meteor.

New Summon: Typhon

The trailer revealed Typhon as a new summon in Revelation. Known to FFVII veterans as a powerful optional boss from the original game, Typhon joins the summon roster with a spectacular cinematic ultimate attack. Players who have save data from FFVII Remake Intergrade will unlock the Chocobo & Moogle summon, while FFVII Rebirth save data unlocks the Phoenix summon.

Open-World Exploration via the Highwind

For the first time in the Remake series, the entire planet is freely explorable via the Highwind airship. Key traversal mechanics include:

  • Parachute drops — Drop in from the Highwind anywhere, seamlessly transitioning from air to land
  • Grappling hook — New traversal tool for reaching elevated areas and hidden locations
  • Chocobo mounts — Return with expanded traversal capabilities across diverse terrain

With Meteor descending and the Weapons unleashing terror, the planet’s conflicts are many. Players choose where to go, who to help, and in what order — a non-linear structure that sets Revelation apart from its predecessors.

FITS System: Job-Inspired Outfits

New to Revelation is the FITS system — unique outfits that bestow new abilities and specialized roles evoking classic Final Fantasy jobs. The trailer showcased Cloud in a Warrior FIT and Tifa in a Black Mage FIT, suggesting players can customize combat roles dynamically. Each FIT offers greater heights of power and specialized abilities tied to classic FF job archetypes.

The Climactic Finale

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the conclusion to one of the most ambitious projects in video game history — a trilogy retelling of the genre-defining 1997 RPG, culminating 30 years of FFVII storytelling. Square Enix describes it as follows:

“Cloud Strife and his loyal companions face a world that teeters on the brink of annihilation. Grieving a beloved ally, and with their nemesis Sephiroth nearing godhood, the party takes to the skies aboard the airship Highwind in a race against time to stop Meteor and the total obliteration of the planet. The final battle has begun. Everything leads here.”

The hybrid battle system returns, expanded and perfected with new playable characters and powerful new abilities. Players can switch between real-time action and Tactical Mode, the series’ acclaimed combat mechanic.
