HoYoverse’s second mega-hit, Honkai: Star Rail, proves the studio is no one-trick pony. Where Genshin Impact conquered the action RPG space, Star Rail dominates turn-based combat — and it does so with style, humor, and production values that would make most AAA studios weep.
A Galaxy of Stories
Unlike Genshin’s open-world exploration, Star Rail takes you across the stars aboard the Astral Express. Each stop — Herta Space Station, Belobog, Xianzhou Luofu, Penacony, and Amphoreus — offers a self-contained story arc with memorable characters, jaw-dropping set pieces, and surprisingly deep lore.
Turn-Based Combat Done Right
The combat system borrows from classic JRPGs but adds HoYoverse’s signature polish. Weakness Break mechanics encourage team variety, while the Trace and Light Cone systems provide deep customization. The addition of follow-up attacks and ultimates that trigger cinematic animations makes every battle feel like an anime episode.
Free-to-Play, Fair-to-Play
Star Rail’s gacha system mirrors Genshin’s, but the game is arguably more F2P-friendly. Story content can be cleared with free characters, and the Simulated Universe roguelike mode offers endless content without requiring premium pulls.

Honkai: Star Rail is the best turn-based RPG on mobile, full stop. Version 3.0 “And So, the First Researcher Shall Speak” continues to expand the universe in bold directions.
