The Metro series has two reasons to celebrate this month. 4A Games and Deep Silver are giving Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux a free next-gen update — arriving October 22 on PC and October 29 on consoles — as the franchise passes 50 million copies sold worldwide, 16 years on from the original Metro 2033’s release.

What the Update Includes

The studio stresses that the update “isn’t a full remaster or remake,” and that “the original Metro Redux experience and aesthetic has been preserved.” What it adds is 4K textures across all platforms, improved animations, higher-quality audio and richer environmental detail, alongside a batch of community-requested bug fixes and quality-of-life changes.

On PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X/S, the games gain native support with platform-specific extras: PSSR on PS5 Pro, TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing on Xbox Series X, and spatial audio on Xbox platforms more broadly. Console players will be able to run the games at native 4K/60fps or upscaled 4K/120fps on compatible displays, with upgraded lighting, shadows and particle effects, DualSense Adaptive Triggers and Xbox Impulse Triggers, hardware tessellation and displacement, and power-saving modes. Xbox players also get Play Anywhere and handheld support, while on PC the update brings DLSS support alongside its own spatial audio and quality-of-life fixes.

Free for Every Existing Owner

The update will be free for all existing owners of Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux on PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Windows Store and GOG, as well as on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Full patch notes are being saved for launch.

The refresh also sets the stage for Metro 2039, the next mainline entry slated to release on February 4. Eurogamer went hands-on with the game back in August, after its release date and PS5 Pro gameplay were revealed at State of Play.
