Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 as a standalone release — and the rollout starts before launch day. Campaign early access opens October 16, the DMZ extraction mode arrives October 20 for digital pre-orders, and the full launch, when multiplayer goes live, lands October 23 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2.

Modern Warfare 4 now effectively has three release dates, as Eurogamer puts it. While campaign early access has been a Modern Warfare tradition, doing the same for DMZ — a multiplayer mode — is new. It is a potentially shrewd move, letting DMZ capture streamers and build excitement across an entire launch week, though since DMZ has its own separate progression, early players could arrive at launch with accrued items and map knowledge.

No PvE DMZ — ‘Turn Off Squad Fill’

In a Reddit Q&A, Infinity Ward also shot down hopes for a PvE-only playlist after a first-look gameplay video appeared to show a “Single Squad Mission” option that later vanished. “The playlist you saw is a developer playlist that was never intended to be for public use, it lets our team load into a match alone to work,” the developer explained. “In the shipping game, players choose to be solo by turning off squad fill, but it’s not guaranteed to be only solos in that lobby.”

The ‘Call of Duty Tax’

Activision’s head marketer says the series faces what the company internally calls the “Call of Duty tax” when it comes to reviews. “We get the coverage, but we call it the Call of Duty tax, when we’re thinking about the reviews or the reception,” he told Kotaku. “There’s 4,500 employees here that are trying to make the best possible experience.”

By the numbers he cited, the audience is hard to overlook: 100 million free-to-play players, 500 million units sold, and a billion downloads on mobile. The franchise’s Metacritic fortunes have been shakier — 2024’s Black Ops 6 scored an 83, last year’s Black Ops 7 a 65, and 2023’s Modern Warfare 3 a franchise-low 56 on PS5. The community wanted something fresh, he admitted, confirming a future title will be a new sub-franchise with groundwork already laid — while Modern Warfare 4, which we have covered before, addresses some of that feedback.

The launch also arrives amid labor friction: unionized Activision testers working on Modern Warfare 4 voted this week to authorize a strike as contract negotiations stall, after more than two years of negotiating their first contract.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026.
