Monster Hunter Wilds: Beginner’s Guide to Weapons

Everything new hunters need to know before taking on their first monster.

Choose Your Weapon Wisely

Monster Hunter Wilds has 14 weapon types, and your choice defines your playstyle:

  • Great Sword: Slow, massive hits. Best for learning positioning.
  • Long Sword: Balanced, mobile, and stylish. Great starter.
  • Dual Blades: Fast, aggressive, high stamina usage.
  • Light Bowgun: Ranged and safe, ideal for solo beginners.
  • Hunting Horn: Buffs your team while dealing solid damage.

Hunt Smart, Not Hard

Before fighting a monster, stock up on potions, traps, and flash pods. Use the environment — walls, traps, and mounted attacks deal free damage. Learn monster tells: every attack has a telegraph, and the game’s scoutflies highlight weak points.

Crafting Loop

Hunt → carve → forge → repeat. Armor skills matter more than raw defense. Elemental matchups are crucial: water beats fire monsters, thunder beats water, etc. Check the hunter’s notes before each quest.

Multiplayer Tips

Never abandon teammates mid-hunt. Always bring Life Powder and Dust of Life. Use the SoS Flare to call for help, and always eat before a hunt — the kitchen buffs are significant.
