NBA 2K27 is out now on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 following its worldwide release on September 4, and the reviews are largely positive — with one familiar asterisk. Critics agree this is the strongest the series has felt on the court in years. The virtual currency economy is another story.
The Critical Verdict
“I’ve been playing NBA 2K since 2K16, and covering it professionally since 2K23,” wrote GameDaily’s reviewer, calling 2K27 “the best this series has felt in years.” SB Nation went further, describing it as “a towering achievement and a testament to how good a game can be when developers listen to their players.” ESPN’s verdict: “a fresh experience that also feels familiar.” PlayStation Universe praised “positive changes to gameplay with an abundance of presentation.”
Not everyone is convinced, though. Beebom scored the game 6/10 — “flashy handles but shaky footwork” — while Sportico argued the game is “not for the nostalgic,” warning that some fan-favorite features might never come back.
MyCareer Gets Its Biggest Overhaul in Years
The centerpiece is a rebuilt MyCareer. This year’s story, Fire & Concrete, runs 11 chapters — more than double the length of last year’s — yet feels faster, trimming cutscene bloat in favor of playtime. New “Skills Training” challenges actually prepare you for the NBA games ahead instead of padding the road to the league. For the first time, you can play through the story in co-op with a friend, and a new eras mode drops your created player into one of five periods of NBA history, from the “Magic vs. Bird Era” all the way to the “Steph Era.”
A Co-Ed, More Compact City
The City now features male and female MyPlayers together for the first time. A new “Casual Corner” lets players warm up with 5-on-5 and 3-on-3 games against the computer before graduating to competitive runs against similarly skilled opponents, and the city itself is more compact — everything from MyCourt to the training facility is a short distance apart, cutting the commute that frustrated players in previous years.
Gameplay Changes
On the court, 2K27 adds upgraded rhythm shooting mechanics, expanded dribbling customization and new step-through up-and-under finishes. The game is also the first title to ship with NVIDIA’s new DLSS 5 support on GeForce RTX 50 Series hardware.
The VC Problem Hasn’t Gone Anywhere
The loudest complaint remains microtransactions. Virtual Currency still drives the MyPlayer experience: reviewers note that starting at a 60 overall rating is a grind, and the pull to spend real money for a 99 overall is as strong as ever. The Ultra Edition’s bundled 135,000 VC softens the curve, but the economy is built to tempt. Meanwhile, single-player MyNBA and MyWNBA modes received only minor updates this year.
Should You Upgrade?
If you live in MyCareer and The City, 2K27 is an easy recommendation — the story, co-op and pacing changes are the franchise’s most player-friendly in years. If you only play MyNBA, 2K26 will carry you another season. The verdict, then: the best gameplay in years, with the same old catch attached.
