Resident Evil Requiem has crossed the $500 million mark, according to estimates from industry analysts Alinea Analytics — making the ninth mainline entry in Capcom’s horror series the fastest-earning Resident Evil ever, outpacing every other game in the franchise to date.
Catching Leon’s Last Blockbuster
The figure, first reported by Alinea’s Rhys Elliott, means Requiem — released February 27 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2 — is closing in on Leon Kennedy’s last blockbuster: 2023’s Resident Evil 4 remake has supposedly earned more than $600 million in three years. Requiem is nearly there in a fraction of the time, elongating what Eurogamer calls Capcom’s “generational win streak.”
PS5 Leads — and Physical Copies Still Matter
The series’ most popular platform this time is reportedly the PS5, where Requiem has sold 4 million copies — and, notably, 30% of those are physical. It’s a stat that lands awkwardly amid the debate over Sony’s plan to end PS5 disc production from 2028: whatever platform holders decide, a meaningful chunk of players still buys discs.
The Movie Helped — But Capcom’s Discounts Helped More
And the film? Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot — which critics hailed as the best-reviewed live-action video game movie yet — set a series-best opening weekend with over $108 million worldwide, but it didn’t move the needle on game sales as much as you’d expect. The bigger factor was Capcom itself: the publisher started discounting multiple Resident Evil games eight days before the film hit cinemas, and by opening weekend Requiem was making 4% less per day on PS5 — “from about $284k to $271k” — as the slight demand bump failed to cancel out the lower price.
The film did lift engagement across the catalog: every game in the series saw a rise in daily players during the opening, with the Resident Evil 2 remake the biggest beneficiary at 48% more players than normal — its Raccoon City setting striking a chord with moviegoers — while the Resident Evil 3 remake jumped 25%.
