Saber Interactive has unveiled a new story trailer for Turok: Origins at Gamescom 2026’s Opening Night Live, confirming the legendary dinosaur-hunting franchise’s return. The fast-paced sci-fi shooter is slated for Spring 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
From N64 Classic to Unreal Engine 5 Spectacle
The original Turok: Dinosaur Hunter arrived on the Nintendo 64 in 1997 and redefined first-person shooters for a generation of console gamers. It combined fluid, weapon-based combat with massive explorable environments and a distinct sci-fi-meets-prehistoric aesthetic. After several sequels and a poorly received 2008 reboot, the series went dormant.
Now Saber Interactive — the studio behind World War Z, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, and the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 — is taking the reins. The shift to Unreal Engine 5 promises photorealistic environments, dynamic lighting for primal jungles and alien ruins, and particle-heavy chaos that defines the series’ signature firefights.
The Lost Lands and the Xenia Threat
Turok: Origins transports players to the Lost Lands — not a single planet but a network of collapsed space-times. This dimension is a mosaic of dense jungles, ancient ruins, and wasteland canyons. Players step into the boots of the elite Order of the Turok, warriors sworn to protect the fabric of reality.
The enemy is the Xenia — not mere space-faring dinosaurs, but a synthetic-organic hive intelligence that consumes and adapts biological material. This means enemies include not only reptilian creatures but also corrupted wildlife and biomechanical monstrosities. The Xenia’s ability to subvert native fauna creates constant dread — a familiar environment can turn hostile in an instant.
What the Extended Cut Trailer Reveals
Following the ONL reveal, Saber released an extended cut with concrete gameplay details:
- Solo or 3-player co-op — The campaign is fully playable alone or online with up to two friends, reminiscent of World War Z’s cooperative structure
- Class-based progression — Different Turok warriors have unique abilities and weapon specializations
- Weapon variety — From classic Turok bows and tek weapons to new alien tech scavenged from the Lost Lands
- Dynamic environments — Collapsed space-time means shifting terrain across multiple worlds
A Franchise Worth Reviving
The Turok franchise has sold over 5 million copies across its history. The N64 originals are still celebrated for their ambitious level design and weapon variety. Saber Interactive’s track record with cooperative shooters makes them a strong fit for a franchise that always thrived on chaotic, weapon-heavy combat against overwhelming enemy hordes.
With Spring 2027 giving the studio plenty of polish time, and Unreal Engine 5 enabling visual fidelity the N64 could only dream of, Turok: Origins has the potential to be the franchise revival fans have waited nearly two decades for.
