Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger — the 1994 FMV space combat classic — is getting a remaster, and it’s being rebuilt from something nobody expected to see again: the original source tapes. EA producer Jim Vessella announced the project during a panel at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, revealing that he had discovered more than 600 source tapes of the game’s famous live-action cutscenes while digitizing EA’s video archive — and that they’re now being restored for a proper re-release.
A 30th Anniversary Edition, 32 Years On
Per a projector slide shared on Bluesky by Video Game History Foundation board member Steve Lin, the remaster is titled Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger — 30th Anniversary Edition. As PC Gamer points out, that’s a slightly unfortunate name, given the game turned 32 this year. The feature list is more forgiving: the remaster will include both source and upscaled versions of the game’s FMVs, run at 60 FPS, add controller support, and ship with “Kilrathi Saga integration” — which presumably means bundling in Wing Commanders 1 and 2 and their expansions. It’s coming to Steam, GOG and the EA app, with no release date announced yet.
Why It Matters
Wing Commander 3 remains a landmark of ’90s PC gaming: a full space-war campaign starring Mark Hamill as pilot Christopher Blair, flanked by Malcolm McDowell, Tim Curry and John Rhys-Davies in live-action sequences that Kotaku ranks among the best-implemented FMV of the era. The series has been more or less untouched since the millennium, and EA isn’t exactly the most nostalgic publisher — which makes a surprise remaster announcement at a retro gaming expo a genuinely strange, and welcome, sight. The timing is stranger still: the news came less than 24 hours after Cloud Imperium Games surprise-released a new trailer for Squadron 42, the single-player campaign from Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, which just opened Steam wishlisting with a Q2 2027 target. The space sim’s two lineages, it turns out, are moving at the same time.
