Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has announced Xbox Labs, a brand-new division within Xbox led by CTO Scott Van Vliet, tasked with exploring emerging technologies and turning them into real games and experiences. The announcement, posted on the official Xbox Wire blog on October 13, positions Labs as a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists working to build in the open, learn from what people do, and measure success by whether more people are playing.

What Is Xbox Labs?

Xbox Labs is described as a new initiative to explore new technology and trial emerging ideas. Sharma’s post references the recent wave of projects that have rapidly decompiled and rebuilt games to run on hardware they were never designed for — Windows PC builds translated to Apple Silicon, classic games remixed with characters from other franchises, and browser-based versions of console titles.

These experiments challenge long-held assumptions about our industry: the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games, Sharma wrote.

The AI Question

While Sharma does not use the words generative AI or vibe coding in the announcement, the subtext is hard to miss. She notes that coding became the first major workload for agents because they can write, run, and test software — a clear reference to AI coding agents. Kotaku observed that the post is a big announcement about AI that’s missing the word AI, pointing out that Sharma references AI models like Claude without naming them directly.

The timing is notable: the announcement came just one day after Epic Games confirmed it was embracing AI-accelerated development for its delayed Disney shooter. Polygon noted that Xbox Labs sounds heavily inspired by the AI-fueled churn of recent months.

Leadership and Priorities

Xbox Labs will be led by Scott Van Vliet, Xbox’s CTO and previously CVP at Microsoft for Azure OpenAI & AI Infrastructure — a hire that signals how seriously Xbox is taking the AI angle.

Sharma was quick to reassure employees that priorities are not changing: We remain committed to the 4Cs [Core, Content, Creator and Connection], to making great games, to our hardware and to being responsible stewards of IP and the communities built around it.

Industry Reaction

The reaction online has been mixed. Kotaku noted that the reaction online to Xbox’s first wave of AI features was widespread scorn and vitriol, and questioned whether Xbox Labs can deliver something that provokes a different response. Insider Gaming described the announcement as a little confusing, or at the very least, it seems like a way to avoid mentioning the words Artificial intelligence or generative AI.

Polygon framed the move as something of a reversal in Sharma’s approach, contrasting it with her February statement that the gaming team would not chase short-term efficiencies at the expense of quality.

What Comes Next?

Details remain sparse. Xbox has not shared specific projects, timelines, or how Labs will interact with existing Xbox first-party studios. What is clear is that Xbox is positioning itself at the center of the industry’s AI conversation — whether through genuine innovation or careful messaging remains to be seen.
