Pawns into the Dark: Only the Tiles Beside Your Pawns Are Visible — Free Demo Ahead of Next Fest

“Everything is visible but the Dark.” Pawns into the Dark, a turn-based tactical dungeon crawler from developer FLYING CAT INC., is built on one of the cleanest hooks we’ve seen in the queue: in an 8×8, board-game-inspired tactical puzzler, only the tiles adjacent to your party are visible.

Uncertain Exploration, Deterministic Combat

The two halves play off each other. Combat is fully deterministic — no dice rolls deciding your fate — so every defeat is a planning failure, not bad luck. But every step into the darkness is a genuine risk: you’re revealing the map by pushing into it, one tile of visibility at a time, with enemies you can’t yet see. The game describes it as a place where “uncertain exploration meets deterministic combat,” and that tension is the whole design.

Demo Now, December Release

The free demo is live now on Steam, featuring four handcrafted campaign floors plus a procedurally generated dungeon mode, and the game takes part in Steam Next Fest on October 19-26 ahead of a planned December 2026 release.

Pawns into the Dark reached us through GamerMenu’s indie submissions program — a one-sentence hook that survived every round of this week’s triage.
