Rockstar Games has finally explained why Grand Theft Auto 6 was delayed twice — and the short version is that the game’s sheer scope, especially its non-player characters, demanded more time than anyone at Take-Two expected to hear about.
On October 14, Bloomberg published a lengthy report on the making of GTA 6, featuring Rockstar’s leadership publicly walking through the project’s history — including the moment head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe had to phone Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick and ask for more time. Twice.
‘Please Tell Me You’re Kidding’
The first delay, announced in May 2025, pushed GTA 6 from its original 2025 window to May 2026. A few months later, Kolbe had to call again — this time pushing the game to November 19, 2026, the date it now launches. We covered that second delay when Rockstar confirmed it.
“I think he said, ‘You’re kidding.’ ‘Please tell me you’re kidding,'” Kolbe recalled of Zelnick’s reaction to the second request. “But once we talked through why, he got it. And I think we are really lucky that he is as reasonable as he is, because a lot of people would say, ‘You’d just better figure out how to ship it.’ And we have been really, really lucky that we have not found ourselves in that place, because that happens to a lot of teams, and we’ve all played those games. It’s not great.”
The ‘Horrifying’ NPC Problem
So why did the game need those extra months? Speaking with Bloomberg, co-head of development Rob Nelson pointed to the game’s NPCs: “The projections they were giving us were horrifying.” The solution was essentially an NPC emergency room, as PC Gamer put it — an entire studio set up in Los Angeles solely to handle the workload of writing and art-directing the crowds that populate the state of Leonida.
Fellow development co-head Phil Hooker explained the decision point plainly: “I think when it became apparent that some areas weren’t going to make it, that’s when we decided to make the shift of date. We could hit that schedule, but it won’t be the game we want to make.”
The obsession with detail extends everywhere — GamesRadar highlighted one of the report’s most-talked-about tidbits: GTA 6 has a realistic sweat system that makes protagonists Jason and Lucia perspire based on how much effort they’re exerting, gathering visibly on their bodies mid-activity.
Project Americas Is Real
The report also confirmed one of GTA 6’s longest-running rumors: the game began life as “Project Americas,” an early concept spanning large regions across both North and South America before Rockstar narrowed its focus to Vice City and the surrounding areas. The codename surfaced repeatedly in leaks between 2020 and 2022 — including claims that Rockstar wanted to build an entire continent rather than a single city — but this is the first on-record confirmation from Rockstar staff that the idea was real. The studio says the early research trips and world-building from that phase carried over into the final design, shaping the game’s realism and direction.
It Won’t Take This Long Next Time
Perhaps the most hopeful note for fans: Rockstar says GTA 6 is a foundation, not a fluke. “The last 30 years has been practice for where we got to here. The team and us as individuals have been doing it for so long that there’s a sort of shared understanding, shared knowledge and a sort of shortcut to questions,” development leads Aaron Garbut and Phil Hooker told Bloomberg — and after eight years between Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 6, the studio insists the next game won’t take as long. “We foundationally changed a lot of stuff on this project,” Garbut said. “But now it’s done, and we’re not going to rip it apart.”
GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026.
