The long wait for Witchbrook finally has an end date. Chucklefish’s gorgeous magical school life-sim — one of the most anticipated cozy games of the decade — launches January 28, 2027, the studio announced during Nintendo’s October Indie World showcase (which we previewed here), alongside a new gameplay trailer.
A Decade in the Making
Chucklefish, the publisher of Stardew Valley and developer of Wargroove and Starbound, first teased the project back in 2017, describing it as something like “Stardew Valley meets Harry Potter.” In 2020 the studio unveiled a dramatically overhauled visual style, changing the game’s perspective from side-on to isometric, and in 2025 it finally announced a release window — which slipped, along with a second window in 2026. January 28, 2027 is the first time Witchbrook has ever had a proper, solid release date, and the studio’s no-crunch policy means that if it took ten years to get the game right, so be it.
What Witchbrook Actually Is
Witchbrook is a bright, colorful life-sim set around a magical school. You’ll attend classes and pass your witch exams, start a magical business, and build friendships — or romances — with your fellow students, your “coven mates,” several of whom (including Pip, Eli, and Leif) have already been revealed on the game’s website. The town of Mossport and its people await beyond the college walls, rendered in handcrafted pixel art. “We have poured detail and care into every pixel, to create a truly handcrafted experience,” Chucklefish and co-developer Robotality wrote in the announcement. “We can’t wait to open Witchbrook College’s grand doors to new students in January, and introduce you to the town and people of Mossport.”
Platforms and Price
The launch won’t be exclusive to any platform: Witchbrook arrives January 28, 2027 on PC, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox and PlayStation 5 — with the PS5 version confirmed outside the Indie World broadcast itself, so no one is missing out at launch. “Welcome to Mossport!” the developers announced. “Witchbrook, our magical life sim, is coming in to PC, Nintendo Switch 1 & 2, Xbox and PS5 on Jan 28th!” The game will go for $25 on Steam, and Chucklefish is also working on physical editions, which will be revealed and released sometime after the initial launch.
The Indie World Context
Witchbrook was the headline announcement of a showcase that also featured a new gameplay look at City of None, the new action-puzzle platformer from one of the co-creators of Celeste, due in 2027, plus Switch 2 dates for titles like Sword of the Sea. For a game that has spent a decade as one of gaming’s most reliable “someday” punchlines, finally having a date — and every major platform on board — is the news fans have waited the longest to hear.
