GTA 6’s First Official Preview Reveals Major Gameplay Details
Rockstar Games has given the world its first official look at Grand Theft Auto 6 through an exclusive preview in Dazed magazine’s September issue. The article includes never-before-seen screenshots and interviews with Rockstar’s developers, confirming several gameplay features that fans have been speculating about for months.
A More Realistic Vice City
GTA 6 is doubling down on the grounded mechanics that made Red Dead Redemption 2 so immersive. Here’s what the preview confirmed:
- Physical changes: Eating, sleeping, and physical exertion will impact how Jason and Lucia look. Skip sleep and it’ll show on their faces. Your playstyle shapes their appearance over time.
- Car handling overhaul: Rockstar hired professional race car drivers to help design vehicle physics. Cars should feel better than ever.
- Phone customization: You can purchase phone cases and headphones — small details that add to the immersion.
NPCs Get a Massive Upgrade
An entire team at Rockstar was dedicated solely to NPC behavior. Highlights include:
- A “fashion ecosystem” for NPCs that reflects their taste, lifestyle, and affluence
- NPCs are tailored to their districts — different neighborhoods feel genuinely different
- 50 artists were hired just to design murals around the city
- Ex-criminals and club promoters were consulted to make characters authentic
- NPCs react realistically to how Jason and Lucia behave and look
The goal? “Total immersion.” Don’t expect to rampage through the game like a murderous tyrant without consequences.
Seamless Co-Op Gameplay
Jason and Lucia’s relationship is at the core of the experience. When playing with both characters:
- One can drive while the other shoots — and you can seamlessly switch between them mid-action
- One can navigate while the other scrolls in-game social media
- You’re free to approach the game solo, but sticking together unlocks unique scenarios
A Deeper Morality System
GTA 6 will feature a morality system that’s more complex than RDR2’s honor system. Rockstar won’t reward “good” behavior as straightforwardly as they did in Red Dead. The preview also teased “deep relationship mechanics” between Jason and Lucia, though specifics remain under wraps.
A More Serious Tone
While GTA 6 will still feature Rockstar’s signature humor, the studio is moving away from one-off parody jokes. NPCs in the infamous nudist town will still make you laugh, but Rockstar wants the world to feel like a “believable culture” rather than a collection of Floridian stereotypes.
Release Date
Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on November 19, 2026.
