Tokyo Game Show 2026 Cancels Final Day as Typhoon Dujuan Bears Down on Japan

Crowds pack the Sega booth on the Tokyo Game Show 2026 show floor

Tokyo Game Show 2026 is ending a day early. Organizers have cancelled the expo’s final day — Monday, September 21 — as Typhoon Dujuan, known in Japan as Typhoon No. 25, bears down on the Kanto region, cutting short what was supposed to be the first five-day run in the show’s history.

The Official Announcement

“Due to the approach of Typhoon No. 25, strong winds and rain are expected to intensify in the afternoon and beyond, and disruptions to transportation are also a concern,” the organizers announced on X on September 19. “Therefore, prioritizing the safety of all attendees, exhibitors, and related parties, as well as ensuring safe return home, we have decided to cancel the event for the entire day. We sincerely apologize to everyone who was looking forward to attending for this unfortunate news.”

The show went ahead as scheduled on Sunday, September 20, but all attendees will be refunded for the cancelled Monday. It remains unclear how the situation will be handled for the developers who purchased booth space for the full five days.

A Record Run Cut Short by a Storm

This year’s Tokyo Game Show carries extra weight: it marks the event’s 30th anniversary, and with a public holiday falling on September 21 in Japan, organizers expanded the convention to a fifth day for the first time ever — making TGS 2026 the longest edition in its history. The Japan Meteorological Agency is forecasting wind speeds that could reach up to 78 miles per hour as Dujuan approaches the Kanto region, including Tokyo, around Monday night local time.

PlayStation Cancels Its Monday Lineup

Exhibitors are already adjusting their plans. “As a result [of Typhoon No. 25], the hands-on demos and streaming events scheduled for September 21 (Monday, holiday) at the PlayStation booth will also be canceled,” Sony announced on X. “We regret to inform everyone who was looking forward to it, but we kindly ask for your understanding.”

A Packed Floor, If Light on Reveals

While this year’s show has been light on big new announcements, the show floor has been anything but quiet. Square Enix built a brand-new hands-on demo for Final Fantasy VII Revelation beneath a giant statue of Sephiroth holding out his sword, the Masamune, preparing to stab the ground. PlayStation has been hosting large screenings of the Grand Theft Auto 6 extended look trailer, complete with in-real-life special effects to enhance the presentation.

The biggest story of the show arrived early: Hideo Kojima appeared at Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast to confirm Bill Skarsgård as the lead of Physint, the Metal Gear Solid spiritual successor Xbox took over after PlayStation stepped away. Even the merch caused scenes — Grand Theft Auto 6 T-shirts triggered scalper-fueled chaos on the show floor over the weekend.
