The Witcher 3 Gets a Free Remaster and a Brand-New DLC After 12 Years
CD Projekt Red just dropped two massive announcements at Gamescom 2026: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered is launching September 29 as a free upgrade for existing owners, and a brand-new expansion called Songs of the Past is coming in 2027. That’s right — 12 years after the original release, Geralt of Rivia is getting fresh content.
What’s in the Remaster?
The Remastered edition is a comprehensive overhaul, not just a resolution bump. Here’s what’s new:
- Upgraded visuals across the board — lighting, textures, and environmental detail
- Enhanced combat with new finishers and improved feel
- New witcher sign effects making magic look better than ever
- Revamped mount handling — Roach finally behaves properly (hopefully)
- Improved traversal and movement for smoother exploration
- Skill tree revamp offering fresh build possibilities
- Transmogrification — customize Geralt’s look without sacrificing stats
- Expanded photo mode for those perfect screenshot moments
- Enhanced monster behaviors making hunts more dynamic
The Remaster is being co-developed with Yigsoft, a Hungarian studio that previously worked on Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. It launches on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and — for the first time — Nintendo Switch 2.
Blizzard Partnership and Battle.net
In a surprising move, CD Projekt Red announced a partnership with Blizzard Entertainment. The Witcher 3: Remastered will also be available on Battle.net. Players who purchase the expansion on Blizzard’s platform will unlock a special Geralt-inspired skin in Diablo 4, with more details coming at BlizzCon in September.
Songs of the Past — Geralt Returns to a New Land
The new DLC takes Geralt to Letten, a brand-new region described as an idyllic land rich in rural tradition and folklore. Its people enjoy bountiful harvests and lavish festivals — but a dark secret lurks just beneath the surface.
Geralt will face never-before-seen foes and wield a new weapon: the chain. The expansion is co-developed with Fool’s Theory, a Polish studio led by Witcher 3 veterans who previously worked on Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 contributions.
Songs of the Past launches in 2027 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. It’s available to wishlist now.
Free Expansions for All Current Owners
As an additional gift, all current owners of The Witcher 3 now have access to both Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions at no additional cost. If you haven’t played these yet, now is the perfect time.
