Resident Evil Requiem’s Story DLC Will Focus on Oswell Spencer — the Villain Behind the Mansion

Resident Evil Requiem’s first story DLC is starting to take shape — and it’s going all the way back to the beginning of the series’ nightmare. Capcom has already confirmed that Requiem will eventually receive story DLC, but official information has been thin. Now a writer on the project has casually dropped the biggest hint yet. Speaking on the Distance Nerding podcast at Meadowlark Comic Con, Requiem writer Haris Orkin revealed that the DLC will continue the game’s focus on Oswell E. Spencer — the Umbrella founder whose mansion started it all.

“In the DLC You Will Understand It Even Further”

Orkin explained that there is an arc for Spencer built into Requiem itself, one designed to help players understand the series’ overarching villain in a new light. “In the DLC you will understand it even further,” he said — before quickly adding that he “probably shouldn’t say that.” Polygon, which first reported the comments, notes the reveal supports rumors that players will return to the Spencer Mansion in the DLC, possibly for one more perspective on the events that led to the original 1996 game.

Why does this matter? Spencer is the man the first game’s iconic mansion is named after, one of the founders of the Umbrella Corporation and, ultimately, the source of the T-virus and everything that followed. The character was killed off in Resident Evil 5, where he last appeared thoroughly unrepentant. Requiem rewrote that picture: through flashbacks centered on protagonist Grace, he was portrayed as far more repentant toward the end of his life than previously believed — Destructoid notes he seemed to genuinely regret his actions, reaching a kind of semi-retribution by the story’s end. The site reads Orkin’s tease as pointing to “either a prequel or a flashback-based story of sorts.”

A Spencer Rewrite — and an RE5 Remake Connection?

The DLC tease also feeds a bigger speculation engine. Polygon points out that Spencer’s softened portrayal in Requiem sits awkwardly against Resident Evil 5’s Lost in Nightmares DLC, where he remains a monster to the very last — and suggests that an increasingly inevitable Resident Evil 5 remake could be where Capcom streamlines the contradiction, using a rewrite to establish a definitive version of the villain’s final years. With the RE remakes’ commercial track record, that’s less a theory than a schedule.

For now, Requiem players still hunting secrets in the base game — which recently became the series’ fastest title to cross $500 million in sales — have a direction to theorize in. The DLC has no release date yet, but its subject is no longer a mystery: the man who built the mansion is coming back, and Capcom wants us to finally understand him.
