One of the PS3 era’s most distinctive cult JRPGs is back, and almost nobody saw it coming. tri-Ace has officially announced Resonance of Fate Enhanced Remaster, and it’s available now on PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam — a genuine stealth drop that began as an eagle-eyed Steam listing spotted on October 28 and turned into a full release the very next day.

What the Enhanced Remaster Adds

The upgrade significantly expands the game’s graphics options, headlined by native 4K output, HDR support and 120FPS performance. Character and environment textures have been upscaled for more detailed, higher-resolution visuals, and a new 2x Game Speed feature has been added — letting you breeze through the original’s famously dense systems at a more comfortable pace. It’s a meaningful overhaul rather than a lazy resolution bump, which is more than many 2010-era remasters can say.

The Pricing

On PlayStation 5, the Enhanced Remaster is priced at $34.99. On PC, the upgrade is priced at $9.99 — and owners of the PS4 version of Resonance of Fate 4K/HD Edition on the PlayStation Network can also upgrade to the PS5 version for $9.99. In other words: if you already own the 2018 remaster, you’re a cheap upgrade away from the new one on either platform.

A ‘Gunplay Symphony RPG’

If you missed it the first time around, Resonance of Fate is worth your attention. Developed by tri-Ace — the studio behind the Star Ocean series — and originally published by Sega in 2010, it’s a steampunk-flavored RPG set in the far distant future, where humanity clings to existence on a ravaged Earth and survives only thanks to Basel, a huge machine that controls the environment. Its heroes fight as mercenaries in “numerous gun fights,” in a combat system the remaster’s marketing calls a “gunplay symphony RPG” — stylish battles where you soar through the air and unleash a barrage of shots, layered over deep strategy. The soaring symphonic soundtrack comes from Motoi Sakuraba and Kohei Tanaka. The game was remastered once before, as the 4K/HD Edition in 2018; this Enhanced Remaster is effectively its second lease on life, and its first on current-gen hardware.
