Subnautica 2’s next big update has a new apex predator — and even the ocean is scared of it. Continuing the “Voyage to Early Access 2” video series, developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment detailed the Collector Leviathan: a major force in the update’s new regions, right down to the trenches and tar fields. When it eventually rolls around, other creatures will actually retreat into the trenches while the Tar Eels seek the fields — as GamingBolt puts it, “you’re not the only one terrified of getting caught.”
The Biggest Update Yet — With No Date Attached
The next early access update doesn’t have a release date, but it’s “certainly the biggest yet,” per GamingBolt. Eurogamer frames it as the next step of Subnautica 2’s “voyage to Early Access 2.0,” with creative director Anthony Gallegos revealing that the update contains the “scariest” region the studio has ever made for the underwater game — multiple new biomes within a spooky region, story additions, new Leviathan behaviors, and a Frog chassis for the Tadpole submersible. In short: it’s a pilotable mech.
Everything Else Coming With It
The Tadpole’s new Frog Chassis comes with limbs that provide new abilities; new Biomods will be there to experiment with; and the Fins let you Dash — no more needing to free up a Biomod slot to do it. New biomes dot the new region, with new creatures to (carefully) meet. The update also digs deeper into the mystery of the Axum and the Colonists: both are wrapped up in mystery, and it’s up to the player to piece everything together from environmental clues and other notable objects — including, hopefully, what led to the previous Colonists’ downfall, while avoiding the same fate.
Subnautica 2 launched into early access to substantial success earlier this year, and it already crossed paths with Dave the Diver for a free crossover DLC. Unknown Worlds says more details are coming in the months ahead.
