The biggest game launch of all time is about to share its release window with a historic union vote. Rockstar’s UK developers will vote on recognizing the IWGB Rockstar Game Workers Union from November 12 to November 26 — a two-week window that opens the very day GTA 6 pre-loading begins and wraps around the game’s November 19 launch on consoles.

What’s Being Voted On

The vote — an anonymous online ballot announced by the union on Bluesky — will decide whether the Rockstar Game Workers Union, a branch of the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB), officially represents staff across all of Rockstar’s UK offices. If the vote carries, it would become the biggest recognized union in the UK games industry, giving employees a say over pay and bonuses, overtime, redundancies, flexible working arrangements, and generative AI policies.

The terms of the recognition deal have been under negotiation between the union and Rockstar management since July. “This November, we have the chance to make gaming history not once but twice. As all our hard work, skill and creativity are experienced by GTA VI players for the first time, our voices will now be heard for the first time too,” Rockstar Game Workers Union committee member Shanti Easton-Steel said in the announcement.

A Tribunal Finishing Launch Week

The vote follows a long and messy labor dispute. In October 2025, Rockstar fired 31 employees in what the IWGB called “the most brazen act of union busting the games industry has ever seen” — Rockstar alleged the fired staff were leaking GTA 6 information in a public Discord, and the matter is now before an employment tribunal in Scotland. That case has been extended, with closing arguments now expected on November 17 or 18 — the days just before GTA 6 goes live. The Rockstar Game Workers Union itself was announced in May 2026, covering people at all of the company’s UK offices.

Rockstar hasn’t commented on the looming vote, but in Bloomberg’s recent feature on the making of GTA 6, head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe indicated the studio won’t stand in the way: “We go where the team goes. So if they want a union, they will have a union.”

Part of a Broader Labor Push

The timing — aligned, as TechPowerUp puts it, with “the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI”, which appears to have been a deliberate publicity move — lands amid an already humming labor push across the games industry. Just this month, Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering developers unionized, and a recent Blizzard workers union agreement addressed protections around generative AI and layoffs. IWGB president Alex Marshall framed what’s at stake: “For anyone who cares about the games industry or the people who keep it running, this vote is just as historic as the game release. But for workers at Rockstar, it is so much more personal: it is fundamentally a choice about whether you get to have a say in how your day-to-day life is organised.”

While the ballot runs, millions of players will be counting down to the same date: GTA 6 launches November 19 on consoles — we covered its launch trailer here — with pre-loading starting a week earlier, on the same day the vote opens.
